I'm writing this review after the 4 of us had dinner last Tuesday night at Lespinasse. First, the tone of this review is going to be negative because quite frankly our experience was somewhat disappointing. The service was mediocre at best. We were paid very little attention to the entire night. I would have at least expected the waiter to come over and ask us if we were enjoying our meals. There was nothing. The first signs of trouble were when we ordered the wine. The waiter tried to slip us a bottle from a different vineyard then the one we had ordered (can you believe this happened at a restaurant of this stature?). My brother was on the ball and picked up on this right away. Their solution was to offer us the bottle at the same price as the one we had ordered. My brother responded that the new bottle was inferior to the one we had oredered and hence should be cheaper. Again he was right. On to the food. I orderd the lemon risotto. The taste of lemon overpowered the dish and to make matters worse the risotto was not even cooked properly. It apparently was just thrown into the pot and boiled like a pasta (a major faux pax). My brother had the diver scallop appetizer (2 scallops). the scallops were not hot and this took away from the dish. Our wives had the tuna tartar which was quite good. My wife ordered the Cod and Salmon for her main and course and I kid you not we laughed when it arrived. Get this...the plate was served with a big piece of cod with pencil eraser sized bits of salmon(maybe 7 pieces)stuck into the top of the cod....I'm not kidding! You can't make this stuff up. I had the duck which was ok but not great by any means. My brother had the poached lobster which he enjoyed and my sister-in-law had the rabbit which she enjoyed as well. The overall experience was disappointing and we will not return. -- 6/19/2002 9:21:49 AM
